NOLA-PS PLANNING FOR RE-OPENING OF SCHOOLS NEXT YEAR
Over the last several weeks the district has been in the assessment phase of the COVID-19 recovery, working with school leaders to determine what has worked and what will be needed to continue to support teachers and students in the next school year. As the district works through realigning plans and budgets for the next school year, NOLA-PS has announced it is creating a Reopening Task Force to advise district administration and the board on needs for school plans and protocols as students return, either in person or virtually, next year. The Task Force will focus on planning for every possible scenario and taking every precaution to ensure students, staff and faculty are safe while helping children grow and learn. The group will be comprised of school leaders, teachers, social workers, medical experts, parents and other key experts, that will focus on how to safely return to school.
Additionally,鈥疦OLA-PS鈥痠s in the process of hiring a medical and public health advisor who will oversee reentry planning processes and who will be available to all schools in the district to advise on actions to take and鈥痟ow to keep our campuses safe.鈥�
UNIFIED START DATE FOR 2020-2021 SCHOOL YEAR ANNOUNCED
As the 2019-2020 school year鈥痗omes to a close,鈥疦OLA-PS鈥痟as been working closely with school leaders to prepare for the 2020-2021 school year.鈥疐or the first time,鈥痑鈥痬ajority of鈥痶he K-12 institutions authorized by鈥疦OLA-PS鈥痺ill follow a citywide, unified calendar. Based on this unified calendar, which was announced after months of collaboration between charter schools, the 2020-2021 academic school year is scheduled to鈥痥ick鈥痮ff between the common window of August 4-11, 2020.鈥疭chools have also agreed to common windows for fall, Mardi Gras and spring breaks and to align to the same dates for all single day holidays as well as Thanksgiving and winter breaks.

SUMMER SCHOOL WILL BE CONDUCTED VIA DISTANCE LEARNING
NOLA-PS has announced that students needing summer school will do so via distanced learning. This is being done in order to ensure the health and safety of our students and staff as the city continues to combat the virus. Any student needing to complete summer school coursework should coordinate with their school leader on accessing distance learning.

NOLA-PS OFFERS SCHOOLS SUPPORT FOR GRADUATION鈥�
As the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic wear on, graduation seniors are having to postpone celebrating the end of their high school careers. While some schools are doing virtual or socially-distanced celebrations on their own, many are planning for full graduations at later dates. NOLA-PS is currently working with schools to carry out a virtual celebration鈥痜or鈥痝raduates, through the NOLA-PS television channel. More details on timing of such celebrations will be released soon. NOLA-PS is also offering鈥痵chools鈥痵upport in planning for virtual and in-person ceremonies as needed and is committed to ensuring all students are celebrated,鈥痺hen it is safe to do so.鈥�
CHILD NUTRITION
Since Monday, March 16, approximately 976,103 meals and counting have been served to students in Orleans Parish.
Current Citywide Feeding Program Schedule:
Students over 18 that are enrolled in public K-12 schools, including students with disabilities through age 22, are also eligible for free meals at open sites.鈥�

WHAT:
The Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB) has scheduled its monthly public meetings for Tuesday, May 12 (Committee of the Whole Meeting) at 1 p.m. and Thursday, May 14 (Business Meeting) at 3 p.m. The meetings will be hosted remotely via teleconference/video conference in an effort to limit the spread of COVID-19 in New Orleans, and to preserve the health and safety of all members of the public. The OPSB will utilize the online platform Zoom to live-stream the committee and board meetings, which will be open for the public to view online and participate.
The board will consider a series of action items in each meeting. Both agendas will be posted publicly no later than 24 hours in advance of the meetings . Public comments will be accepted during the live stream of the meetings.

To comment online, please submit a public comment card prior to the start of the meeting or within 30 minutes after the meeting begins. NOLA-PS and school leaders are taking鈥痚very precaution鈥痶o ensure鈥痵tudents, as well as school staff,鈥痑re鈥痵afe while鈥痥eeping鈥痗hildren鈥痚ngaged鈥痠n鈥痩earning.鈥疦OLA-PS鈥痠s meeting with schools weekly and planning for various scenarios based upon what types of social distancing may be required when school begins and is providing guidance to schools, in coordination with state and local health officials, on how best to make schools safe for students and staff upon reopening.
Additionally,鈥疦OLA-PS鈥痠s planning to have a licensed physician available to all schools in the district to advise on actions to take and鈥痟ow to keep our campuses safe.鈥�

CONTINUOUS LEARNING 鈥� COX COMMUNICATIONS EXTENDS CORONAVIRUS RESPONSE OFFER FOR CONNECT2COMPETE WITH FREE SERVICE FOR STUDENTS UNTIL JULY 15
Recognizing that students will remain home to finish out the school year, Cox has extended free Connect2Compete service, the company鈥檚 low-cost internet offer for families with a K-12 student at home until Wednesday, July 15. Remote service support is also extended to ensure ease of implementation while students continue to learn at home during the Coronavirus pandemic. Customers that sign-up between now and May 15 are eligible for this offer and will receive free service until July 15.

NEW ORLEANS 鈥� (May 8, 2020)鈥�- 天博体育, in collaboration with community partners, recently launched a web-based resource guide designed to assist students with disabilities transitioning into life after their high school careers. The resource guide is a virtual substitute for NOLA-PS鈥� third annual NOLA-PS Transition Resource Fair, which had to be canceled this year due to the COVID-19 public health crisis.
The purpose of the 天博体育 Transitions Resource Guide is to connect students with disabilities and their families, as well other educators and professionals, with the range of programs, supports, and services that are available as individuals prepare for adulthood. Areas covered include employment, community access, housing, independent living, financial planning and legal rights. The is free and accessible to the public and will provide critical information about supportive programs to students with Individualized Education Programs (IEP) or 504 accommodations as well as their families, employers, and support providers.
More than 60 local organizations and agencies are participating and have provided information about their missions, updates on how COVID-19 has impacted agency and organizations services as well as links to accessible audio and video resources for students.
鈥溙觳┨逵� has a responsibility to help all our students navigate through a successful transition after their high school careers,鈥漵aid NOLA-PS Superintendent of Schools Dr. Henderson Lewis, Jr. 鈥淚 am excited to see NOLA-PS鈥� Exceptional Children鈥檚 Services team think outside the box, by transforming what has been, for the past two years, a robust Transitions Fair event to an informative digital resource guide, to ensure our students with disabilities and their families continue to receive the critical information and support they need to pursue independent citizenship and improve their quality of life.鈥�

NEW ORLEANS 鈥撯�(May鈥�6, 2020)鈥� On Tuesday, May 5, NOLA Public School鈥�(NOLA-PS)鈥疭uperintendent of Schools, Dr. Henderson Lewis, Jr., Assistant Superintendent of Schools Mary Garton along with Board President Ethan Ashley and Board Member Leslie Ellison,鈥痟elped to honor a total of鈥痜ifteen鈥�2020鈥疦ew Orleans Excellence in Teaching Award (NOETA)鈥痵emifinalists in an unique way. Dr. Lewis, Garton, Ashley, and Ellison surprised the semifinalists with social distancing visits to their homes that included the dropping off of a special lawn sign to recognize these individuals for their outstanding work as Orleans鈥疨arish educators.鈥赌�
鈥淎s part of Teacher Appreciation Week, I had the honor and privilege鈥痮f鈥痵urprising the deserving NOETA Award semifinalists at their homes,鈥� said NOLA-PS Superintendent Dr. Henderson Lewis, Jr. 鈥淚t was wonderful getting鈥痶o鈥痗elebrate their achievement. The NOETA鈥疉ward鈥痺as鈥痗reated in 2015 by New Schools for New Orleans. In the fall of 2018, NOLA-PS took over the planning and execution of the program to help honor more outstanding鈥痶eachers throughout New Orleans public schools.鈥疭chool leaders, teachers, coaches and other academic or cultural leaders at any New Orleans area public school or network were eligible to nominate exceptional teaches for this citywide award.鈥赌�
