天博体育 Announces Districtwide School Closures Extension Through April 30 Due to COVID-19 Health Crisis
NEW ORLEANS 鈥� (April 2, 2020) 鈥� Per today鈥檚 announcement by Governor John Bel Edwards to extend the stay-at-home order through April 30th, all NOLA public schools will remain closed for the duration of the month of April. This necessary action is an effective way to slow the spread of COVID-19 across our city and state.
鈥淭he Governor has extended the stay-at-home order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, and I support that decision,鈥� said NOLA-PS Superintendent of Schools Dr. Henderson Lewis, Jr. 鈥淲e have been closely coordinating with schools and local officials to prepare for school closure. We have remained dedicated to serving our students through distance learning, providing schools access to mental health resources, and daily meals to those families in need during this trying time. We will continue to provide supports and solutions to our students, educators and families.鈥�
NOLA-PS is problem-solving at the district level to help address gaps in internet access and connectivity across our community of schools. To that effect, NOLA-PS has procured 10,000 Chromebook laptops and 5,000 Wi-Fi Hotspots in an effort to improve distance learning. NOLA-PS is working in close coordination with schools to address the need for each student population and prepare the Chromebooks and hotspots for direct distribution to schools. The District is working quickly to have these much-needed resources received, programmed and distributed in a timely manner so that continuous learning can remain equitable for 天博体育鈥� students. We expect distribution efforts to begin next week.

ONEAPP MAIN ROUND RESULTS NOW AVAILABLE:
On March 31, 天博体育 (NOLA-PS) released K-12 OneApp placement results for the 2020-2021 school year. Families can log-in and review those placement results by visiting: If families need help accessing their OneApp results, they may contact the Enrollment Team at (877) 343-4773 or via email at [email protected]. Early Childhood results are expected in May.
K-12 families still seeking a new school for next year may participate in the second round of OneApp, which opens Monday, April 6, 2020 and closes Wednesday, May 6, 2020. As always, the application process is online-only and available at . Families are strongly encouraged to apply to schools with remaining availability in their child鈥檚 grade. Projected availability will also be available at prior to Round 2 opening.
The OneApp is the centralized school enrollment application process for Orleans Parish public schools. OneApp provides students and families with the opportunity to apply to schools citywide, based on their child鈥檚 unique needs and interests.
CHILD NUTRITION:
Since Monday, March 16, approximately 306,900 meals and counting have been served to students in Orleans Parish, with approximately 73,100 being served today.
Students over 18 that are enrolled in public K-12 schools, including students with disabilities through age 22, are also eligible for free meals at open sites.
As a precaution, the District has reissued reminders to all officials at school child nutrition sites to follow the health screening protocols provided by the District for feeding sites. Screening methods include, but are not limited to, daily temperature checks of staff before meals are prepared. Those guidelines apply to all sites operating in the Citywide Coordinated Feeding Effort. NOLA-PS in coordination with the New Orleans Health Department will make decisions regarding the operation of individual Community Feeding sites as a result of this screening method.

STARTING TODAY - CHILD NUTRITION PICK-UP SCHEDULE MOVING TO TWICE A WEEK:
In an effort to better serve and protect the health of students, families, food service providers, and staff at community feeding sites, 天博体育 and our partners are condensing the weekly schedule at the Citywide Feeding Program sites by providing multiple days of meals during specific daily time frames. NOLA-PS also asks the business community for its support in ensuring that working families are allowed to leave work to pick-up these meals to ensure they are able to benefit from this program. ONEAPP UPDATE 鈥� EARLY CHILDHOOD DEADLINE TOMORROW, MARCH 27
Due to the circumstances surrounding COVID-19 and verification center closures, the Early Childhood (6 weeks 鈥� 4 years old) verification deadline on OneApp has been extended. However, the online application submission deadline will remain Friday, March 27. Families should complete the online portion of the application by the Friday, March 27 deadline, though they will not be able to complete the document verification process. Additional information will be shared with families who submit an application by that deadline about how to provide necessary documents for these programs.

CONTINUOUS LEARNING - NOLA-PS PROCURES 10,000 CHROMEBOOK LAPTOPS:
On Wednesday, March 18, 天博体育 (NOLA-PS) announced it has been collecting data from school leaders to assess Wi-Fi access needs among students and as a result has secured 5,000 hotspots to support gaps in Wi-Fi access for public school students most in need. NOLA-PS is utilizing emergency funding approved by the Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB) on Friday, March 13 to purchase the hotspots. NOLA-PS will be finalizing a plan for distribution in coordination with schools based upon need at the school and student level. All families are also encouraged to review and consider Cox鈥檚 low-cost internet offers for families, through their Connect2Compete program. Additionally, NOLA-PS is working with schools to utilize AT&T鈥檚 special offerings of free internet for 60 days, Distance Learning and Helping You Work and Learn Remotely.

On Tuesday,鈥疢arch 17,鈥疊ESE submitted a letter to Gov. John Bel Edwards moving to cancel LEAP testing, school performance scores and requirements for end-of-course testing, a move many other states have made.鈥疉t this time the district and our schools are focused on caring for our community by ensuring continuity of learning, and availability of child nutrition programs.鈥� NOLA-PS鈥痺ill be assessing how these various waivers and potential actions will impact the 2019-2020鈥痵chool year鈥痑nd beyond鈥痑s more information comes available over the coming months.鈥�.
